Unit 1.3 : Technology in Education

"As educators, we must take our cues from our students' 21st century innovations and behaviors.

We need to pay attention to how our students learn, and value and honor what our students know.

We must remember that we are teaching in the 21st century. This means encouraging decision making amoung students,

involving students in designing instruction, and getting input from students about how they would teach.

Teachers needn't master all the new technologies. But we must find ways to incorporate into instruction

the information and knowledge that students acquire outside class in their digital lives."

- Marc Parensky, "Listen to the Natives," Educational Leadership

Read the two excerpts below:

The first excerpt is from a book writen by James Paul Gee who gives exceptional insight into

taking cures from our students to become better educators. The second excerpt is from a book written

by Bransford, Brown and Cocking on how technology can be used to support learning in today's world.

How People LearnChapter 9 Technology to Support Learning

Reflect on the benefit of technology in your 21st century classroom.

What benefits can technology have for your students?

What benefits can technology have for your curriculum?

What pedagogy ideas behind the databases you read about, like CoVis and CSILE, can be used in a simpler form within your classroom?

Reflections

Technology has a place in the social studies classroom.  In fact, I think it brings many benefts, as the readings highlight.  Technology has the ability to stimulate interest in learners, help learners manage information, documents, assignments and as a result knowledge.  Technology provides opportunities for formative assessment.  In the social studies classroom, distance learning equipment can bring my students places they may never have the opportunity to visit, thus making the content more real.  Technology connects people.  My students have used it to learn about historical events from people living throughout the country.  Overall, I think technology allows for easier differentiation and it is more appealing to more learners. For a reading task like the following one, think about giving more background and directions and list full title of the readings, so that the participants understand what to read and why (better learning engagement and orientation)

Read the two text excerpts below:
